Project

MAIN
OBJECTIVE

BioPhenom explores the isolation of biophenols from industrial biomass sidestreams and their utilization for replacement of SVHC in the development of safe, sustainable, and recyclable materials. By upgrading selected biomass sidestreams, the project will produce bio-based, flame-retardant, and recyclable materials, including wood products, CF thermoset composites, and thermoplastics for various industrial applications.

The BioPhenom project will contribute to reaching European Green Deal’s ambition of zero pollution and to the application of the Safe and Sustainable by Design framework in the development of bio-based solutions, thus promoting reduction of waste and the transition towards a circular bioeconomy.

SPECIFIC OBJECTIVES

The overall objective of BioPhenom will be attained by a set of 6 complementary-specific objectives (OBJs) presented in the animation below:

BACK

OBJECTIVE 1

Scope opportunities and challenges for the development of safe and sustainable bio-based solutions from biophenol-rich biomass sidestreams.

OBJECTIVE 2

Select and design the isolation and functionalisation of biophenols from selected sidestreams.

OBJECTIVE 3

Test and develop safe and sustainable by design wooden, thermoset, and thermoplastic materials.

OBJECTIVE 4

Assess and benchmark the functionality and recyclability of product demonstrators.

OBJECTIVE 5

Integrate and develop the SSbD framework for assessing the safety and sustainability of biomaterials.

OBJECTIVE 6

Contribute high-quality data generated along targeted value chains through effective and efficient dissemination, communication, and exploitation activities.
